Abstract
This study examines the prevalence of and the main socioeconomic factors associated with food insecurity among mid and old age householders by age group using data from the 2015 Korea Welfare Panel Study. The prevalence of food insecurity is 2.6% for mid-age (50-to-64-years old), 3.7% for young-old (65-to-74-years old), and 5.8% for old-old (75-and-older). The high prevalence of food insecurity among those of old age is considered due to the high prevalence of poverty among them. The economically disadvantaged households have higher prevalence of food insecurity across the three age groups and it is highest among the poor of the mid-age group (18%). When all else is held constant, low income-to-poverty ratio and non-ownership of house are significantly associated with food insecurity across the three age groups. In addition, male householder, living alone, poor subjective health status, working in full time, and non-work are significantly associated with food insecurity among the young-old and old-old groups. Based on the findings, implications for food security-related policy and services are discussed.
